The Three Sisters (plus support act) 2013 gig

Yesterday, with enthusiastic help from Cheep and the team of under-gardeners http://twitter.com/celiahart/status/350924596121333761/photo/1 I tidied up and filled the Three Sisters pit with compost from our two-year-old heap. The compost mound is now planted with this year's 'sisters' . . .

Beans: Runner Bean 'Black Salford' plus one plant of Climbing French Bean 'San Antonio' (the only one that I managed to germinate)

Corn: 'Rainbow Sweet Inca'

Squash: 'Black Futsu' x 2 and Marina di Chioggia x1

Interplanted with Sunflower 'Earthwalker' (because I needed somewhere to plant these and I don't trust Cheep not to peck them if they are planted in the new cut-flower bed).

This was posted directly from the vegetable garden by the magical means of wifi :-)

  1. I look forward to seeing pictures as this progresses. Did you do it last year? Lovely to see Holly and Cheep, bless them.

  2. I love the sound of your 'Black Salford' beans and unusual squash. I look forward to seeing photos too. Glad I'm not the only one who had trouble getting French beans to germinate this year!

    1. I start my beans in pots, only the saved San Antonios failed this year, should have sowed more.

  3. It's all looking highly productive, despite the best efforts of your under gardeners. My 'garden pest' has discovered that if he does a belly flop onto the chick mesh round the raised bed he can squash it down enough to hoist his stumpy little legs over... hmmm...

  6. I have never planted beans. Are they difficult to grow? I a very novice vegetable gardner. Love wifi!

    1. I'm not an expert for your area, so look around to see if your neighbours grow them.
They are easy so long as they don't get cold and wet while germinating, that's why I start them in pots and plant out the small plants when the soil is warm. They like warm sunny weather, the roots mustn't dry out nor get too wet.

  7. I have never tried this myself as I don't grow sweetcorn but I think the principle is great. As I am writing this is is getting dark and I can hear two cats 'yodelling' outside - they sound like red indians dancing round the camp fire - lol.
