Whodunit?

Is this the opening scene from an episode of Midsommer Murders?

No of course not, it's our village Garden Bowls Tournament Final
which was this afternoon.

My bowling partner and I had, without conferring in any way,
selected almost matching toe-nail colours!
Was this a sign?

We did OK – that's me bowling a pretty straight ball
– right in line with the jack!
Not that it did a lot of good mind!
there were some rather cut-throat tactics employed
by the opposition!

Then there was a very splendid tea for players and spectators,
that walnut cake was spectacularly good!

Oh by the way, we didn't win.
We came 5th.

Out of 6.

Oh well, we'd only entered the first round to make up the numbers!

And the sun shone all day :-)

  2. Walnut cake and sandwiches with the crusts cut off. I think the blue nail polish lends a rather risque edge an otherwise proper and civilized event!

  3. What a lovely way to spend the afternoon. The walnut cake looked particularly scrummy! :)

  4. Both my parents are huge fans of bowls, and play most days! I love the Englishness of it all. The perfect afternoon, and that cake *salivates* a feast for the eyes.

  5. How very bucolic! It all looks marvellous and at least you were not last.

  6. Celia, that first photo truly did look like an opening scene to a jolly little village mystery story. I was very glad to read that all the fierce bowling competition did not lead to blows, but rather to a delightful celebratory tea.

There is a lawn bowling and croquet club that has jurisdiction over a very, very manicured green area of Central Park. Only members allowed inside the wire fence and all that. Still, it is permissible to watch from the other side of the fence, and I can definitely tell that these folks, who all dress in white (haven't actually seen any toes,) are very, very serious about their chosen sport. Of course, they do also laugh a bit!

  7. What a perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon and you certainly had the weather on your side too. I think fifth is a very civilised position :)

  8. Hi Petoskystone - not many 'serious' players at this event!

Hi Terry - just goes to show we were a well matched team ;-)

Hi Ruth - I'm told this is the recipe:

Hi Zoe - Playing all that bowls probably does your parents a power of good!

Hi Toffeeapple - but for a couple of dastardly incidents we would have come at least 3rd!

Hi Frances - I think Central Park bowls players probably take their game much more serious than we did!

Hi skybluepinkish - yes indeed - perfect weather for bowls!

Hi Simone - exactly what I thought! And the score masks some exceptionally good shots (?) throws(?) which counted for nothing in the end!

I've worked out that playing 5 matches consists of doing 60 lunges and walking at least 2 miles! No wonder we needed cake!

  9. What a civilised way to spend an afternoon. I could trot out the old adage about 'it's not the winning, but the taking part' but I suspect ladies daring enough to wear blue nail polish were in it to win it really!
